November 2010

2010 started full on and continued throughout the year. Our team gave it their all and we are proud to say we survived the recession.Well done team.2010 meant a huge amount of traveling with winning tenders in Waipa, Hamilton, Waikato and Franklin District Councils. We have completed projects that stretched our skills and made us branch out of our comfort zones. It was all hands on deck to have success. Our accounting package has paid for itself and we can now say we have our hands on the pulse. We know exactly how much is owing week to week and what is owed to us, budgeting and forecasting are things we have learnt heaps about and it is a nice feeling to not have the panic at the end of the month.

We had a couple new members join our team and welcome Alex Hoebergen and Reynaldo (Rey) Martinez. Also Tu Goodwright came back after a short break.Nice to have you back Tu.

As we head into the Xmas period, tenders will be thick and fast.It happens every year and we are ready to finish the year on a high

December 2009

2009 was a hard year for many businesses alike and not only in our game. it saw the doors close on a number of businesses. yes, the recession affected our business and I would be lying if i said it did'nt. we have learnt so much and i guess you are never too old to learn.

Our team did a fair bit of travelling to and from Pukekohe for the Franklin District Council to complete the Franklin Road Pump Station Upgrade. We then went up to Rotowaro Mines to do some subsoil drains and also completed the site development for parking for Transpower, just to name a few of the bigger ones.

we down sized our team which meant we were sad to say goodbye to a couple of our team members who either went back to previous employers or retired. It is never easy to goodbye and we wish them all the very best.We installed a new accounting system and are still in the learning stages.

December 2009 had us win 5 tenders at once so just as most companies were thinking of long hot summer days by the pool or beach most of our team were gearing up for new projects and working through the Xmas break.

The re branding launch was a HUGE success which was great to see as Sherie and Kirsty had put many long hard hours into creating this special event. It was great to see so many familiar faces and a few new one’s who I hope to get to know better in the near future.

Our staff spirits and moral are exceptionally high and the team now stand out in the field in their new uniforms. The vehicles are all sign written and no doubt you will all see them around, they are turning heads. Our new name Brown Drainage and Construction will reflect the scope of work we do and have done for many years. We are more than just a drainage company! We wanted to make sure we were targeting the right market so we can keep focused on producing what we do best – drainage and construction. I feel the name reflects the game we are in. We look forward to working with some of you in the near future and Enhancing Your Environment.

Mike Draper - CEO

It was a successful evening & nice to socialise with the team and have a few yarns with work colleagues from different Companies. The night answered a lot of people’s questions as to what Brown Drainage was up to. We managed to keep it under wraps until the night! With the new name Brown Drainage and Construction, we are just stating the obvious and doing what we do best.

Wider understanding of how Communities, the environment and sustainability is changing has driven Brown Drainage & Construction to look at the bigger picture…

Mike Draper - CEO of Brown Drainage & Construction writes...

…We have made a few positive changes at Brown Drainage & Construction over the past few years and we felt it was time we recognized that we are now progressing into the future. We have put in a lot of hard work upskilling our team and sorting out important issues like site tidiness. We hope to take Brown Drainage & Construction well into the future, but wanted to let people know that for all of our plans and ideas, we still hold the same work ethics that my father built this Company on over the last 30 years, which are reliability, honesty and hard work! So on the 5th September, we revealed our new company name, Brown Drainage & Construction Ltd, which is one of the many planned steps towards looking at the bigger picture.

It was an exciting (for us!) yet intimate event at 'Tables on The River' restaurant in Hamilton and gave us a chance to catch up with colleagues we hadn't seen for a while and also thank those people who have supported us for some time now. Both Sherie and I really enjoyed our evening and we hope our guests did too. We would like to thank everyone who attended and who sent their best wishes to us, it was really appreciated.

The reason that we have re-launched ourselves as Brown Drainage & Construction Ltd, is because we are a contributor to the infrastructure growth in this Country. We feel it is not only our duty to do the job right, but to understand how we can add value to local Communities, protect the environment and consider sustainability. We wanted to show people our commitment to understanding the impact of our work and I think that our new tagline 'Enhancing your Environment' sums this up.

As our Communities in NZ grow and change, everyone will need to contribute their efforts towards preserving our environment. I know that Councils will have long term plans in place and if the smaller businesses who support and work with them, like ourselves, can get behind the vision too, the outcomes will be SO much greater!

More news soon…

Mike.
